Chapter 1.01

The following resolution was adopted on July 28, 1964:

Whereas,

The public library's function in America has been established by tradition, law and the logic of a free, democratic society, and

Whereas,

This function is to assemble, preserve and make easily available the printed and other materials that will assist all the people to:

  • Educate themselves continuously
  • Keep pace with progress in all fields of knowledge
  • Become better citizens
  • Be more capable in their daily occupations
  • Develop their creative and spiritual capacities
  • Appreciate and enjoy works of art and literature
  • Make such use of leisure time as will promote their personal and civil well-being
  • Contribute to the growth of knowledge;

Now, Therefore, be it resolved that

The Board of Supervisors of Alameda County hereby declares it to be the continued policy of the county to promote the establishment and development of a system of free public libraries and to accept the obligation of their support by the county and other appropriate public bodies in such manner as may be provided by law.
