This month, AC Library joins its LGBTQIA+ community members in celebrating Pride Month 2023. Pride Month was celebrated following the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion —a historical turning point in the fight for queer rights. Thanks to the efforts of activists like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Stormé DeLarverie, and Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, this rebellion became a movement.
With book bans on the rise these past few years and anti-gay and anti-trans laws being passed nationwide, it’s more important than ever to have spaces of belonging. Public libraries can and should be these places of belonging. Libraries strive to offer programs that reflect the diverse voices and experiences of all. AC Library will continue to offer programs and gatherings that include and embrace our LGBTQIA+ communities.
This year, AC Library also celebrates another year of Summer Adventure with our 2023 theme: A Magical Journey. This month, we want to highlight some magical books with LGBTQIA+ representation in our collection--- we could all use a little magic this year.
