Upcoming Learning Partner Orientation – Become a Learning Partner this fall!

Did you know that September 8 is International Literacy Day?  This day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1967 to bring awareness to the important role literacy plays in creating a more just and equitable world.  To celebrate this day and learn why literacy is an important issue in the United States, visit your local AC Library or our online catalog, donate books to a local community center or school, read to or with someone, or learn more about how literacy is an important issue in the United States.  If you’d like to have a direct impact on the lives of our community members by helping them reach their literacy goals, keep reading!

Alameda County Library’s Education and Literacy Services provides community members with free 1-on-1 support to help them achieve their reading and writing goals, as well as their listening and speaking goals. Our services are available to both youth (7-16) and adults (17+), each of whom are matched with a volunteer Learning Partner who works with them on an individual basis. Our volunteer Learning Partners are kind individuals with open minds who value patience, empathy, flexibility, and working collaboratively with our learners. They meet our learners where they are and aim to create a learning environment that is relevant to learners’ lives, goals, and needs. They understand that learning takes time, can be difficult, and that everyone learns differently.

If this sounds like YOU, we invite you to join us! Our Learning Partner orientation and training series is launching this fall, and we hope to see you there. Learn more about our upcoming training series and requirements to become a Learning Partner:
