Read, Reflect, Create

As November arrives and the days grow shorter, stories help us stay connected. They bring new voices forward and remind us that imagination and community can thrive in any season.

On Friday, November 14, libraries and readers everywhere will join together for Indie Author Day. This day is a celebration of independent writers and the power of local stories. It's a chance to:

  • Discover books by authors in our own community
  • Watch this year's virtual celebration
  • Try free tools that help anyone become a published writer

This year, five local writers submitted their books to the Indie Author Project Contest. Their work shows the creativity and heart found right here at home. You can read their titles and other indie books on BiblioBoard. This eResource is a free online reading platform for AC Library members. We've gathered this year's submissions in the Alameda County Featured Authors collection. There are no holds or waitlists, so you can start reading right away.

Watch the Virtual Celebration

You can join the free virtual celebration on Friday, November 14 starting at 9 am Pacific (12 pm Eastern). It's hosted by the Indie Author Project.

The event includes:

  • Author spotlights
  • Writing and marketing tips
  • 2025 Indie Author Project Contest Winners Announcement

You can drop in for one session or stay for the whole program. Each part offers something for readers, writers, and anyone who believes in the power of local storytelling.

Make and Share Your Own Book

For many people, this time of year inspires reflection and new ideas. If you've ever thought about writing your own story, Pressbooks can help you make it happen.

Pressbooks is a free online tool that lets you design, format, and publish your work using your library card. Once your book is ready, you can share it through the Indie Author Project. Then readers can discover it on BiblioBoard and in libraries across North America.

If you need some inspiration or connection, try one of our writing workshops and clubs. You’ll meet other writers, share ideas, and learn together.

Celebrate Local Stories

Local authors remind us that creativity lives in every community. Their work reflects the imagination, curiosity, and resilience found across Alameda County. By reading local books, joining the celebration, or exploring our self-publishing tools, you take part in a community where stories keep growing and new ones begin.

Stories connect us across neighborhoods, experiences, and moments in time. However you choose to take part this November, we hope you'll find something that inspires you and reminds you that your story matters too.
